Chapter 4

Sarah needed a job. She loved being around the boys and Cass when they were home. But this week, with the boys going to school and Cass having gone to see his brother about some contracts he was working on, she realized she was simply bored.

Going out to lunch with the women had been a blast. But they had other obligations, and she’d been left on her own today and yesterday. Even Jane had jobs she took care of. Plopping down on the couch, she looked around the room. There wasn’t a single thing out of place and not a speck of dust for her to clean up.

I need your help. She smiled at Camilla when she touched her mind. I know you’re supposed to be resting and all, but I could use your help downtown. These stupid men think I’m in over my head and a little nuts.

Certainly not your sons, I’m thinking. Camilla laughed and said they knew better than that. I would hope so. So who are the men you want me to go there and keep safe from their own stupidity? Because we both know that if any of the rest of the family finds out, they’ll be as dead as a post.

The man who has the building next to the one I’m thinking of using. I’ve been thinking on this for several weeks now, and I’ve finally gotten up the nerve to go and see the place. Oh, Sarah, this is the perfect place for my jams and such. I have even been working on making soaps. They’ve turned out a good deal better than I thought they would for a first-timer. Sarah told her she could more than likely do anything she set her mind to. Well, I’ll only tell you this, but I certainly didn’t start out on the correct footing with my lotions. I haven’t any idea what I did wrong, but not only did it get hard as a rock, but it smelled like it had crawled out from under it as well. So will you come down here and save this old fool? I’d very much appreciate it.

I’d love to. She was pulling on her coat even as she asked for directions. I know where that place is. It is a nice building. And I believe it has a couple of floors you can work with as well. What’s the man’s beef about you opening up a shop next to him?

As she made her way to the shop, Sarah laughed at the man’s objections to having a woman’s shop, his words, next to his manly place. Then Camilla explained how manly the place was where he sold things.

Cigars, of all things. I tell you, sometimes I don’t mind the smell of those things, but I’d just as soon not have them dirtying up my air. But he’s worried that too many women will pass by his place and tell their husbands to stay out of there. I don’t know.
